17-OH-Progesterone is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands and gonads.
It is an intermediate product in the synthesis of cortisol and androgens.
The test is most commonly used to detect Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH), a genetic disorder that affects cortisol production.
Clinical uses include:
Diagnosing CAH in newborns, children, and adults.
Monitoring treatment effectiveness in patients with adrenal disorders.
Evaluating causes of infertility, irregular menstrual cycles, or hirsutism in women.
Supporting investigation of adrenal tumors or hyperplasia.
The test is performed using a blood sample, often in the morning when hormone levels are highest.
