Absolute Lymphocyte Count (ALC) Test Overview

Lymphocytes are a subtype of white blood cells that play a key role in defending the body against infections.

The ALC test provides the exact number of lymphocytes per microliter of blood, rather than just a percentage.

It is often part of a Complete Blood Count (CBC) with differential.

Doctors use ALC to evaluate:

Immune system strength.

Response to infections (viral, bacterial, parasitic).

Blood cancers like leukemia or lymphoma.

Autoimmune disorders or immunodeficiency conditions.

Both low counts (lymphocytopenia) and high counts (lymphocytosis) can indicate underlying health issues.

Analyte: Lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell).

Normal Range: Typically 1,000–4,800 lymphocytes/µL of blood in adults (ranges may vary by lab).

Low ALC (Lymphocytopenia): May suggest HIV/AIDS, bone marrow disorders, chemotherapy effects, or autoimmune disease.

High ALC (Lymphocytosis): May suggest viral infections (e.g., mononucleosis, hepatitis), chronic inflammation, or blood cancers.

Clinical Use:

Detects immune deficiencies.

Monitors infections and treatment response.

Supports diagnosis of hematologic and autoimmune conditions.
