Anti-Smooth Muscle Antibody (ASMA) Test Overview

ASMA are autoantibodies that target actin and other smooth muscle components.

They are most commonly associated with autoimmune hepatitis type 1 (AIH-1).

Clinical uses include:

Supporting diagnosis of autoimmune hepatitis type 1.

Differentiating autoimmune hepatitis from viral hepatitis and other liver disorders.

Occasionally detected in conditions such as primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), chronic hepatitis, and some connective tissue diseases.

The test is performed using a blood sample, typically via ELISA or immunofluorescence methods.

Analyte: Anti-smooth muscle antibodies in blood serum.

Normal Result: Negative (no ASMA detected).

Positive Result: Presence of ASMA → suggests autoimmune hepatitis type 1 or related autoimmune liver disease.

Clinical Use:

Confirms autoimmune hepatitis type 1.

Helps differentiate autoimmune vs viral liver disease.

Guides treatment and monitoring in autoimmune liver conditions.
