Calprotectin is a protein found in neutrophils (a type of white blood cell).
When the intestines are inflamed, neutrophils migrate to the gut and release calprotectin, which is excreted in stool.
Clinical uses include:
Detecting inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
Differentiating IBD from IBS, since IBS does not cause inflammation.
Monitoring disease activity and treatment response in IBD patients.
Assessing unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms like chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, or blood in stool.
The test is performed using a stool sample.
