Gamma Glutamyl Transpeptidase (GGT) Test Overview

GGT is an enzyme found in the liver, bile ducts, pancreas, and kidneys.

It plays a role in glutathione metabolism and amino acid transport.

Clinical uses include:

Detecting liver disease (hepatitis, cirrhosis).

Identifying bile duct obstruction.

Monitoring alcohol consumption and abuse.

Differentiating liver vs. bone disease when alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is elevated.

Often measured alongside ALT, AST, ALP, and bilirubin for a complete liver function profile.

Analyte: Serum GGT enzyme activity (U/L).

Normal Range (varies by lab):

Men: ~8–61 U/L

Women: ~5–36 U/L

Abnormal Findings:

High GGT: Indicates liver disease, bile duct obstruction, chronic alcohol use, or certain medications.

Normal GGT with high ALP: Suggests bone disease rather than liver disease.

Clinical Use:

Provides a sensitive marker for hepatobiliary disease.

Helps distinguish between liver and bone pathology.

Supports monitoring of alcohol-related liver damage.
