Glucose – Random Blood Sugar (GRBS) Test Overview

Random blood sugar reflects the immediate glucose level in circulation.

Unlike fasting or postprandial tests, GRBS can be done at any time, making it a quick screening tool.

Clinical uses include:

Screening for diabetes mellitus.

Monitoring blood sugar control in diabetic patients.

Detecting hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia in emergency settings.

Often used in conjunction with FBS, PPBS, HbA1c, and GTT for comprehensive evaluation.

Analyte: Blood glucose concentration (mg/dL).

Normal Range (varies by lab):

< 140 mg/dL → Normal

140–199 mg/dL → Prediabetes (possible impaired glucose regulation)

≥ 200 mg/dL → Diabetes mellitus (especially if accompanied by symptoms like polyuria, polydipsia, weight loss)

Abnormal Findings:

High GRBS: Suggests diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance.

Low GRBS: Indicates hypoglycemia, which may be due to insulin therapy, endocrine disorders, or prolonged fasting.

Clinical Use:

Provides a rapid, non‑fasting measure of glucose metabolism.

Helps in emergency diagnosis and monitoring.

Supports ongoing management of diabetic patients.
