Lipase Test Overview

Lipase is a digestive enzyme produced mainly by the pancreas.

It helps break down dietary fats into fatty acids and glycerol.

Elevated lipase levels in blood indicate pancreatic inflammation or injury.

Clinical uses include:

Diagnosing acute pancreatitis (lipase rises within hours and remains elevated longer than amylase).

Monitoring chronic pancreatitis and other pancreatic diseases.

Detecting pancreatic duct obstruction or gallstone-related conditions.

Supporting evaluation of abdominal pain of unclear origin.

The test is performed using a blood sample

Analyte: Serum lipase enzyme activity.

Normal Range: ~10 – 140 U/L (varies by lab).

Abnormal Findings:

High lipase: Suggests acute pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, gallstones, bowel obstruction, or renal failure.

Low lipase: Rare, but may occur in chronic pancreatic insufficiency.

Clinical Use:

Provides a sensitive marker for pancreatic injury.

Helps differentiate pancreatic vs. non-pancreatic causes of abdominal pain.

Guides treatment and monitoring in pancreatic and biliary disorders.
