Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) Test Overview

MCV is calculated from hematocrit and red blood cell count, expressed in femtoliters (fL).

It indicates whether red blood cells are small (microcytic), normal (normocytic), or large (macrocytic).

Clinical uses include:

Classifying anemia types (iron deficiency, thalassemia, vitamin B12/folate deficiency).

Supporting diagnosis of conditions affecting red blood cell production.

Monitoring overall red blood cell health in routine blood work.

The test is part of a Complete Blood Count (CBC) panel.

Analyte: Average red blood cell volume.

Normal Range: Approximately 80–100 fL (varies slightly by lab).

Low MCV (Microcytic): Suggests iron deficiency anemia, thalassemia, or chronic disease.

High MCV (Macrocytic): Suggests vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, liver disease, or alcoholism.

Clinical Use:

Helps classify anemia type.

Provides supportive information alongside MCH (Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin) and MCHC (Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration).

Guides further diagnostic testing and treatment.
