Packed Cell Volume (PCV) Test Overview

PCV is expressed as a percentage of red blood cell volume relative to total blood volume.

It is determined by centrifuging a blood sample and measuring the packed red cell layer.

Clinical uses include:

Diagnosing anemia (low PCV).

Detecting polycythemia (high PCV).

Monitoring hydration status (dehydration can falsely elevate PCV).

Supporting evaluation of overall hematologic health.

The test is part of a Complete Blood Count (CBC) panel.

Analyte: Red blood cell volume percentage in blood.

Normal Range:

Men: 40–54%

Women: 36–48%

Children: 32–44%

Low PCV: Suggests anemia, blood loss, nutritional deficiencies, or chronic disease.

High PCV: Suggests polycythemia, dehydration, or chronic hypoxia (e.g., lung disease, high altitude).

Clinical Use:

Helps classify anemia severity.

Detects abnormal red cell concentrations.

Guides further diagnostic testing and treatment.
