PCV / HCT Test Overview

Packed Cell Volume (PCV), also called Hematocrit (HCT), represents the percentage of blood volume occupied by red blood cells.

It is a key parameter in assessing oxygen-carrying capacity of blood.

Clinical uses include:

Detecting anemia (low PCV/HCT).

Identifying polycythemia (high PCV/HCT).

Assessing hydration status (dehydration → high PCV, overhydration → low PCV).

Monitoring patients with chronic diseases affecting blood production.

The test is performed using a blood sample, typically via centrifugation or automated hematology analyzers.

Analyte: Percentage of red blood cells in blood.

Normal Range:

Men: ~40–54%

Women: ~36–48%

Children: ~32–44%

Abnormal Findings:

Low PCV/HCT: Suggests anemia, blood loss, nutritional deficiencies, or chronic illness.

High PCV/HCT: Suggests polycythemia, dehydration, or chronic hypoxia (e.g., lung disease, high altitude).

Clinical Use:

Provides a direct measure of red cell mass.

Helps guide diagnosis and monitoring of hematological and systemic conditions.

Often interpreted alongside hemoglobin and RBC count.
