Plasma Fibrinogen Level Test Overview

Fibrinogen is a soluble plasma glycoprotein produced by the liver, essential for blood clot formation.

During coagulation, fibrinogen is converted to fibrin, forming the structural basis of a blood clot.

Clinical uses include:

Detecting bleeding disorders (low fibrinogen).

Identifying thrombotic risk (high fibrinogen).

Monitoring patients with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).

Assessing inflammatory states (fibrinogen is an acute-phase reactant).

The test is performed using a plasma sample.

Analyte: Fibrinogen concentration in plasma.

Normal Range: Approximately 200–400 mg/dL (varies slightly by lab).

Low Levels: May indicate liver disease, DIC, severe bleeding, or congenital fibrinogen deficiency.

High Levels: May suggest inflammation, infection, pregnancy, cardiovascular risk, or malignancy.

Clinical Use:

Evaluates clotting ability.

Detects abnormal fibrinogen levels in bleeding/clotting disorders.

Supports diagnosis and monitoring of systemic conditions.
