Postprandial Blood Sugar (PPBS) Test Overview

PPBS reflects how the body handles glucose after food intake.

It is typically measured 2 hours after a meal, when blood sugar peaks.

Clinical uses include:

Diagnosing diabetes mellitus and impaired glucose tolerance.

Monitoring glycemic control in diabetic patients.

Assessing the effectiveness of diet, exercise, and medication.

Detecting postprandial hyperglycemia, which is linked to cardiovascular risk.

The test is performed using a blood sample.

Analyte: Blood glucose concentration after a meal.

Normal Range (approximate):

< 140 mg/dL → Normal

140 – 199 mg/dL → Impaired glucose tolerance (prediabetes)

≥ 200 mg/dL → Diabetes mellitus

Abnormal Findings:

High PPBS: Indicates poor glucose control, diabetes, or insulin resistance.

Low PPBS: May occur with excess insulin or certain medications.

Clinical Use:

Provides insight into post-meal glucose regulation.

Helps tailor treatment plans for diabetic patients.

Supports early detection of diabetes in at-risk individuals.
