Progesterone Test Overview

Progesterone is a steroid hormone produced mainly by the ovaries (corpus luteum) and placenta during pregnancy.

It prepares the uterus for implantation and maintains pregnancy.

Clinical uses include:

Evaluating ovulation and luteal phase function.

Assessing infertility and menstrual irregularities.

Monitoring early pregnancy viability.

Diagnosing ovarian or placental dysfunction.

Supporting evaluation of hormonal therapy.

Often performed alongside estradiol, LH, FSH, and hCG for a complete reproductive profile.

Analyte: Serum Progesterone (ng/mL).

Normal Range (varies by cycle phase and lab):

Follicular phase: < 1 ng/mL

Luteal phase: ~5–20 ng/mL

Pregnancy (first trimester): ~11–44 ng/mL

Abnormal Findings:

Low Progesterone: Anovulation, luteal phase defect, infertility, risk of miscarriage.

High Progesterone: Pregnancy, ovarian cysts, adrenal disorders, or certain tumors.

Clinical Use:

Provides a marker of ovulation and reproductive health.

Helps guide fertility treatment and pregnancy monitoring.

Supports endocrine and gynecological evaluations.
