Random Blood Sugar (RBS) Test Overview

Glucose is the body’s main source of energy, regulated by insulin.

The RBS test provides a quick snapshot of blood sugar levels without fasting requirements.

Clinical uses include:

Screening for diabetes mellitus.

Monitoring glycemic control in diabetic patients.

Evaluating patients with symptoms of hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia (fatigue, excessive thirst, frequent urination).

Often performed alongside Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS), HbA1c, and Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) for comprehensive assessment.

Analyte: Blood glucose (mg/dL).

Normal Range (varies by lab):

<140 mg/dL → Normal

140–199 mg/dL → Prediabetes (impaired glucose tolerance)

≥200 mg/dL → Suggestive of diabetes mellitus (requires confirmation with repeat or other tests)

Abnormal Findings:

High RBS: Indicates hyperglycemia, diabetes, or impaired glucose tolerance.

Low RBS: Suggests hypoglycemia, which may be due to insulin overdose, fasting, or metabolic disorders.

Clinical Use:

Provides a rapid, non‑fasting measure of blood sugar.

Helps guide diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment planning.

Supports endocrinology, internal medicine, and general practice evaluations.
