Stool for pH Test Overview

Stool pH reflects the digestive and absorptive status of the gastrointestinal tract.

Acidic stool (low pH) often indicates carbohydrate malabsorption, where undigested sugars are fermented by colonic bacteria.

Clinical uses include:

Detecting lactose intolerance and other sugar malabsorption syndromes.

Evaluating chronic diarrhea in infants and children.

Supporting diagnosis of short bowel syndrome, celiac disease, or pancreatic insufficiency.

Often performed alongside stool reducing substances, stool osmolarity, and stool cultures for comprehensive evaluation.

Analyte: Stool pH (measured using indicator paper or electrode).

Normal Range: ~6.5–7.5 (neutral to slightly acidic).

Abnormal Findings:

Low stool pH (<5.5): Suggests carbohydrate malabsorption (e.g., lactose intolerance, sucrose intolerance).

High stool pH (>7.5): May indicate bacterial overgrowth, infection, or altered gut flora.

Clinical Use:

Provides a simple, rapid marker of malabsorption and gut health.

Helps guide diagnosis and management of pediatric and adult GI disorders.

Supports gastroenterology and nutrition evaluations.
